World War 1 Essay In this essay, I am going to explore the similarities and differences between different WW1 poetry. I will be looking into the points that the poems show and comparing them with each other. Different poems are written for different reasons and they are written to show different things. In terms of the realities of war, In Flanders Fields is the only poem that truly shows this. This is because John McCrae wanted to show the realities of war because his friend had died during the war, this meant that McCrae was determined to show the realities of war and not let people think that it was easy or fun as people said it was. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow (In Flanders Fields) This shows that war isnt all that good. It explains quite bluntly that they are dead, this is to show the harsh realities of war. It represents that they no longer have lives because they are soldiers and so do nothing else but fight. It explains this by using past tense, which shows that it no longer exists. The poem In Flanders Fields also shows mans inhumanity to man. This is also because McCrae is trying to show what war was really like and show the insensitive realities of war. Take up our quarrel with the foe (In Flanders Fields) This shows that people in war did show inhumanity to the opposition because they were not suppose to be a team together, they are fighting. By using the word foe, it is dehumanising the enemy and making them a lesser worth. Also the word take, is an imperative and shows that war isnt fair. This poem is quite clearly not propaganda. On the other hand, some poems were very positive for war and try to show war as a positive thing so that they recruit young men and soldiers and encourage them to enlist. To show war as a positive thing, the poets often used euphemisms for death in order to make it sound good. His lance is broken; but he lies content (The Volunteer) This shows death in a positive way and makes it sound as if it is something good. It shows the reader that even though they have died, they feel good about it and are proud to die for their country. However in the same poem, there are also some negative points which show that the poem is not completely propaganda or positive for war.

The Nuclear Crisis of 1993 The question of a nuclear North Korea has roots dating back to the 1980's. Initial concerns arose in the mid-1980's, with intelligence reports proposing the potential for North Korean nuclear ambitions. Reports cite the construction of a nuclear reactor capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium . The reactor in question, located in Yongbyon, was the focus of the first North Korean nuclear crisis in 1993. The Clinton administration proceeded with diplomatic efforts, forging an agreement by 1994 that effectually ended the crisis. Under the Agreed Framework, North Korea agreed to: (1) halt operation and construction of nuclear reactors, (2) freeze reprocessing of spent fuel (from which plutonium can be derived to make nuclear weapons), and (3) allow IAEA inspectors to monitor nuclear facilities. In return, the US agreed to: (1) lead an international consortium in the construction of two proliferation-resistant light-water reactors (LWR), and (2) supply fuel oil until the firs t reactor is deemed operational . The Current Crisis in Brief The current crisis officially began in October 2002, when a visiting US delegation, led by Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly, confronted North Korean officials with evidence of a nuclear weapons program (using enriched uranium, as opposed to the plutonium used in its first weapons program). Often, most speakers try to employ both techniques or mix the two on one idea. Any way an individual looks at it, the effects of public speaking is enormous. The power of speeches is often reflected in coming revolutions and revolts. Public speaking by good speakers often drives society (Osborn, 2008). They direct the vision and incite feelings into masses. They help awaken a dead public and bring about social change. Speeches by famous state leaders such Roosevelt, and their quotes such as â€Å"Ask not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for your country† spiraled the American nation out of recession and gave a sense of hope to the general public. They instill motivation, inspiration and hope into entire nations that spell positive change in society as a whole (Osborn, 2008). However, if speeches go wrong they can bring nations to collapse. Bad speeches result in loss of faith in leadership or the credibility of the speaker. Thus, the topic losses argument and drives people in the opposite direction. This can have an enormous effect on the outcome of whatever is to be achieved through a speech. Bad speeches often tilt audiences to the other side which is not desired by the speaker (Osborn, 2008). It could be a particular topic or subject or a social issue that he wishes to communicate to the public in some way (Osborn, 2008). Knowing what the main purpose of the speech is, the speaker clearly defines their role and boundaries. Thus, the speech is more directed and substantiated with relevant material. Brainstorming is technique used to generate ideas for a particular topic. To gather relevant information about a topic or things a speaker might be able to mention in his or her speech, brainstorming is crucial. The outline development gives the speech organizational structure. The beginning, the middle and the end of the speech are clearly defined which help the speaker deliver the speech in a directed flow rather than a haphazard manner (Osborn, 2008). This is crucial to make sure one important point in the speech is followed by another to strengthen arguments being made. Creating a conversation is often crucial in public speaking. The fact is that when you’re dealing with the public, you have to be the public (Henderson, 2007)! If the speech is to influence a segment of the population or leave an effect, having a conversation with the audience rather than simply speaking will leave a much more significant impact on the listeners (Henderson, 2007). Involving the audience is an extension of creating a conversation. By keeping the audience involved in the speech and related specific points to the relevance of the audience, speakers often employ this to gain attention (Jaffe, 2006). Similarly, rhetorical questions are asked to make the audience ponder over the point being discussed and to awaken them from their possible slumber. Finally, the delivery stage is crucial. How a person will plan the physical message, the visual message and the vocal message is essential (Zeole, 2008). The tone of voice, the level of aggression and the way the speaker speaks leaves an impact on the audience. Thus, concrete facts or those that the speaker wishes to lay emphasis on should be made in a different tone of voice then ordinary points. Similarly, the style by which a speaker speaks is also crucial to gaining attention of the audience. Without attention from the audience the basic aim of communication is in disarray (Zarefsky, 2007). Adolph Hitler: With all the negativity attached to Hitler, one thing that he accomplished quite significantly was his ability to speak. His public speaking skills managed to arose the emotions of an entire nation. He was able to accomplish what his main aim was, to gain the support of the people (Moore, 2006). Hitler used to make many pauses between his speeches. Whenever he started a speech he would always pause and give the audience time to recognize him. Thus, creating an impression on the public always (Domarus, 2007). He followed that with hand movements which are still recognized today! His ability to change the tone of his voice during speeches was incredible. He would speak silently on some issues perhaps even whisper. While on others he would yell at the top of his lungs. The rate at which he spoke was also under his control entirely. Often a time he would speak faster and other times slower to solidify his arguments. He could easily relate the speech to his audience by talking about visual concrete things such as country, land, and the people. More than just mere abstractions. His ability to make use of repetition to strengthen his points was uncanny. He would repeat the same point under different vocabulary to strengthen his arguments (Domarus, 2004). Furthermore, Hitler always spoke on specific topics. He never let the topic of the speech go broad and thus laid more emphasis and excited more feelings when the topic was a narrow one (Domarus, 2004). Finally, the eye contact which he kept with the audience kept the audience actively involved in the speech. His emotional ploys would be the focus rather than just reasoning alone. He fought a speech at a very emotional level with the audience. Barrack Obama: When we talk of Barrack Obama, we know that he won the presidential elections of America. No doubt his convincing and persuasive style of speaking had a role in his victory. To get votes you must be able to influence. Barrack Obama strengths as a speaker is clear. His first emphasis is generally on content. By stating the problem, building up the situation with detail, who is to blame, and then creating and delivery a situation shows great organizational structure of his speeches. The audience understands the message on a step by step basis (Leane, 2008). His use of repetition, metaphors, and descriptive language gain the attention of the audience significantly and helps relate the topic under discussion to the audience. Furthermore, his style of delivery is of particular importance. His ability to gain trust of the audience by being honest and straight with the audience has led to a perception about him that has developed through his delivery style (Leane, 2008). His tone of voice, the speed and the pauses he uses are quite significant in his persuasive speeches. Often when nearing an important point, Obama is seen to start speaking faster and in a louder tone (Leane, 2008). His employment of pauses between various points gives the audiences a chance to ponder over what he is exactly saying and absorb it. These factors bring about a greater intensity in his speeches. With more than 150 careers on her resume she has worked as a Nurse, lifeguard, dance teacher and even astronaut. Her popularity has spread throughout the world for decades. She is beautiful, talented and every little girl has yearned to have her. Who is this woman you may ask? Her name is Barbie. I will be speaking about the History, popularity, and controversies of the Barbie doll. The Barbie doll was invented by a woman named Ruth Handler in 1959. Ruth had a daughter named Barbra and noticed that she would make paper dolls and enjoyed giving them adult roles. During that time there were not many dolls that were adult like. Most represented infants known as the baby doll. Ruth shared her idea with her husband who was the co founder of the Mattel Toy Company. Initially he was unenthusiastic about the idea. Saying that the idea was to expensive and wouldn’t be marketable. Ruth’s idea was inspired by the Lilli doll which was based on a popular comic strip. The Lilli doll was a blonde bombshell, working girl who Ruth felt represented women in a positive view. Despite Ruth’s initial support from her husband she worked on her design of the doll with her engineer friend Jack Ryan. The doll was given the name Barbie named after Ruth’s daughter Barbara. The doll debuted at the American International Toy fair March 9, 1959. This date is also used as Barbie’s birthday. When the Barbie Doll was launched she was introduced as a teenage fashion model. She was available in blonde or brunette wearing a black and white bathing suit, pony tail, sandals and e6ar rings. Over the years the Barbie design has changed in many ways. For example, in 1971 the dolls eyes were adjusted to look forward instead of a sideways glance. In 1961 a red haired Barbie was added to the collection. 19 years later in 1980 the first African American and Hispanic Barbie doll was launched. Ever since 1959 the Barbie doll phenomenon has not slowed down and still sells millions of dolls per year today. The Barbie doll was a breath of fresh air for children and the toy industry which leads me to my next topic the Barbie dolls popularity. The Barbie doll is one of the most successful dolls in history, with sales of more than 1.7 billion in 1998. According to the Mattel Toy Company, 3 Barbies are sold every 2 seconds throughout the world. Today, Barbie has become a brand and is not limited to just dolls. There are video  games, computer programs that allow young g irls to design outfits for Barbie and of course movies. Barbie appeared in toy story 2 and 3 as a supporting character to woody and Buzz light year. Time Square even named one of the streets Barbie Avenue for a week. The Barbie doll has been a growing favorite for little girls all over the world. A billion Barbie’s have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries. There are more options as to what type of Barbie that can be bought which I believe ads to its popularity. Because the Barbie brand offers so much variety as far as race and ethnicity, occupation, and fashion trends the brand has made history with this invention. Ruth states in her book â€Å"Dream Doll†; I designed the doll with a blank face so that the child could project her own dreams and future onto Barbie†. Ruth’s vision for her doll was to be positive and to help young girls self esteem. She felt it was important for children to have a realistic view of women through the doll. With that being said many people did not agree with her and the Barbie doll caused a lot of controversy. One criticism that the Barbie doll received was from moms stating that they felt it was inappropriate to have a doll with breast. Ruth Stated in an interview â€Å"I believe it is important to a little girls self-esteem to play with a doll that has breast, besides one day she too will have breast and she is beautiful†. Another huge controverserial topic was the body image. If Barbie was to be a real women her measurements would be a 36† breast 18† waist and 33† hip if Barbie was a human she would not be able to stand up straight because her body was not proportioned of a normal women, An academic expert n=by the name of John Hay stated that the likelihood of a women being shaped like Barbie was less than 1 in 100,000. Many people felt that this was not giving a realistic to young girls view on how a women’s body is shaped. Critics felt that young girls would believe that if they are not shaped like Barbie they would have poor body image and could lead to eating disorders. Although the Barbie brand came out with their first African American and Hispanic doll in 1980, some of the African American community was not happy about the representation of the doll. They felt that the only thing that the doll had was darker skin but lacked African American features. For Awhile the black Barbie had dropped in sells drastically until finall y the Mattel  toy company recalled all the black Barbie’s and created them to have more of African American features. Although the Barbie has received much controversy, Ruth and her invention has been a game changer. She started off with one idea and it changed the world. Today Barbie is a brand and has been going strong for over 50 years. She took a risk even though she didn’t have much support from others she felt in her heart that she wanted to invent something that was contrary to what was being sold in the toy industry. The lesson in this is to follow your dreams no matter how much support you may or may not have. If you have a vision go for it and despite whatever criticism you may receive persevere and you too can change the world.
